Why "Just Cleaning It" Doesn't Always Fix an Overflowing Gutter

Most people assume an overflowing gutter needs clearing out, and sometimes that's the whole job. But a gutter that overflows in ordinary rain, not just during a storm, is very often a sign of something else entirely — an incorrect fall, an undersized system for the roof area feeding into it, or brackets that have corroded and let the whole run sag out of alignment.

Clearing debris from a gutter with one of those underlying problems buys you a few dry weeks at best; the same overflow comes back the next time it rains properly, and a homeowner who's paid for a clean twice in one season without the problem going away is usually dealing with one of these root causes rather than leaves.

Gutters need a slight fall — a few millimetres per metre — toward the downpipe to drain properly.

A gutter installed without that fall, or one that's shifted out of alignment as fixings have aged, pools water instead of draining it, and that standing water is exactly what accelerates the next failure: bracket strain, joint separation, and eventually a sagging section that pulls away from the fascia entirely.

Our Approach: Check the Whole System, Not Just the Reported Spot

Every callout starts with checking fall, brackets, joints, and downpipe flow together, because a fault at one point is often actually caused by — or causing — a problem somewhere else on the same run.

We diagnose which of the four is actually responsible before quoting anything, rather than clearing debris, calling it fixed, and having you call back in a month when the real cause resurfaces. Where a section needs replacing, we match the existing profile and colour so it doesn't look patched from the street.

Access is the other major factor in what a job costs. A gutter reachable from a ladder is a different price than the same repair requiring scaffold — this isn't a Dublin-specific quirk, it's true of any roofline work, but it's worth knowing upfront so a quote doesn't come as a surprise.

What's Actually Failing: Brackets, Joints, Fall, or Downpipes

Sagging sections happen when the brackets holding the gutter to the fascia corrode, or the fascia timber behind them rots from years of standing water sitting against it. A sagging gutter collects even more standing water in dry weather, which speeds up the exact rot that caused the sag in the first place — it's a cycle that gets worse the longer it's left.

Leaking joints are common on older systems joined with sealant rather than modern union brackets; that sealant perishes within five to eight years and starts dripping water down the wall behind the gutter rather than into the downpipe, which is easy to miss until damp shows up somewhere inside.

Blocked downpipes cause the exact same overflow symptom as a blocked gutter, but from further down the system — a gutter can be completely clear and still overflow if the downpipe feeding it is blocked, which is why we check the whole run rather than just the visible section.

Corroded cast iron guttering, common on older Dublin period properties, rusts through over time. Patching a rust hole holds for a while, but once corrosion has started in one section, it tends to be present elsewhere on the same run too.

FAQ's

Guttering Frequently Asked Questions

My gutters are clear but still overflow — what's wrong?
This almost always points to either an incorrect fall or a gutter that's undersized for the roof area draining into it, neither of which is fixed by clearing debris. A physical inspection is the only reliable way to tell which, since both look identical from the ground.

How often should gutters actually be cleaned in Dublin?
At least twice a year — typically after autumn leaf fall and again in late spring — for most properties. Homes with significant overhanging trees may need it more often to stay genuinely clear rather than just recently cleared.

Can you repair just one section, or does the whole gutter need replacing?
In most cases we repair or replace just the affected section and match the existing profile and colour, rather than redoing the entire run when it isn't necessary.

Will a small leak in my gutter actually cause bigger problems if I leave it?
Yes, and it's the most common expensive mistake we see — water tracking down a wall from a small leak over a couple of winters leads to damp, fascia rot, and in older properties, damage to brickwork and pointing that costs considerably more than the original repair would have.

Do you check downpipes as part of a standard gutter clean?
Yes — a clean that doesn't check downpipe flow is only half the job, since a blocked downpipe causes the identical overflow symptom as a blocked gutter itself.

Is cast iron guttering worth repairing or should I replace it with uPVC?
Depends on the extent of corrosion. A single rust patch on an otherwise sound cast iron run is worth repairing; corrosion showing up in multiple sections usually means the whole system is reaching end of life, and replacing with uPVC removes the ongoing corrosion problem for good.
